During COVID, I spent five long weeks separated from my twins, who were in the NICU.
I was only allowed to visit for an hour or two each day. In those quiet and heartbreaking moments of distance, the only thing that connected us were little fabric hearts given to us by a premature baby charity. Each night, I would sleep with them pressed to my skin, lightly misted with my perfume. When I visited, I would tuck them beside my babies so they could still smell me and know, somehow, that I was there. That I was their mum.

But through that experience, I quickly realised something troubling. Not all perfume is created equally.

Some of the fragrances I had once loved weren’t safe, not for pregnancy, not for breastfeeding, and certainly not for precious skin-to-skin moments. Later, when I was pregnant again with my third baby, that awareness deepened. Every time I sprayed perfume, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I might be introducing something unnecessary, maybe even harmful, into my bloodstream and close to my growing baby.

The natural perfumes I tried felt all wrong too. They were earthy, spicy, heavy, intense in ways that didn’t sit well with my heightened senses. None of them felt tender, soft or feminine. None were made for this vulnerable and beautiful chapter of motherhood.

And so, De(ux) Mains Perfumery was born. The first Australian natural perfumery lovingly crafted for mothers. Soft, buttery, clean scents, gently made here in Australia with our native botanicals. Delicate enough for pregnancy, postpartum, and those precious close moments.
